The Nigerian Society of Engineers Makurdi Branch led by the branch chairman Engr. P. U. Manger, MNSE on Tuesday 25th March, 2025 paid a courtesy visit to the Director General, Benue State Bureau of Special Projects and Infrastructure, Engr. Prof. Gabriel Delian Akpen at his office in Makurdi.

The Chairman congratulated the DG on his well deserved appointment and expressed appreciation to the Engineering friendly Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia for finding a member of the NSE Makurdi Branch Worthy of this appointment, informing the DG of the collaboration and support of the branch in order for him to succeed in this great assignment.

Furthermore, the Branch Chairman intimated the DG of the programs and projects carried out by the Branch which includes but not limited to:

a. The monthly Ordinary General Meeting (OGM);

b. 2025 Engineering week;

c. Acquisition of land for the building of the NSE secretariat, among others.

The Chairman specifically requested the DG to be the main speaker at the 2025 Engineering Week and help facilitate the allocation of the land beside COREN State Office as well as sponsorship of Prizes at the 2025 Engineering Games.

Other areas of assistance requested from the DG was the sponsorship of Engineers to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and National Conference of NSE and COREN, employment of more engineers at the Bureau and other MDAs and students internship.

Finally, a request was also made for the infrastructure score card of the Administration of His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. H. I. Alia

In his response, the DG Engr. Prof. G. D. Akpen welcomed and thanked the Nigerian Society of Engineers Makurdi Branch for identifying with him. He also expressed his deep appreciation to the Governor of Benue State for finding worthy of this appointment and promised not to disappoint both the Governor and the NSE Makurdi Branch.

The DG further promised to support the Branch in any possible way within the available resources. On the land issue he promised to liase with the Secretary to State Government (SSG) and the Commissioner for Lands and take our request to the Governor for necessary action.

He expressly agreed to be the main speaker for the 2025 Engineering week coming up in May and for the sponsorship of Prizes for the games he requested the committee to furnish him with specifics so that he will know where to come in.

On the issue of employment, the DG said he has employed more than ten (10) Engineers and will do more as the opportunities come up.

Engr. Prof. Akpen said he can call on the NSE at any time to help in the area of Monitoring and Supervision of projects carried out by the Bureau.

He finally promised to make the infrastructure score card of the present administration available to NSE and to find time and attend NSE programs.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers Makurdi Branch, Engr. Phelim Ukeyima Manger, MNSE on Saturday 8th March, 2025 in company of other Engineers and Spouses witnessed the presentation of a Two Bedroom Apartment built by Engineeress Tolu Agbede to a widow Mrs. Iveren on Sebastine Bam street Ayihe, Makurdi. During the presentation, Engineeress Agbede thanked God for the opportunity to touch the life of a widow whom she got to know through the Engineers Spouses Association Makurdi Branch during one of their programs to help widows. She also thanked those who contributed in one way or the other to make this project a reality.

Speaking the NSE Makurdi Branch Chairman thanked Engineeress Agbede for her kindness and encouraged other to reach out to the needy in any way they can as this gesture symbolises through Christianity.

Responding, the widow who is also disabled from an accident she had I 2022 was full of gratitude to God, Engineeress Agbede and all who came to witness how God visited her through Engineeress Agbede.

Prayers were said and the house was anointed by a Rev. Father and Pastor who were also invited to witness the house presentation.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers Makurdi Branch this Tuesday 4th March, 2025 paid a condolence visit to the family of late Engr. Oryiman S. Tar who died last Thursday 27th February, 2025 after a brief illness. The branch chairman Engr. Phelim Ukeyima Manger, MNSE presented a letter of condolence to the family on behalf of the branch.

Responding the head of the family and elder brother to the deceased Dr. Bem Tar responded by thanking the NSE Makurdi Branch for coming to identify with them in their moment of grief. He notified the branch that the wake will come up on the 12th of March, 2025 with burial taking place on 14th March, 2025 at his village in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.

Prayers were said for the family by Engr. P. Orseer Akange, MNSE. About 12 Engineers, one Graduate member and one student member were in attendance.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers Makurdi Branch today 4th March, 2025 joined the rest of Engineers across the Globe to celebrate the 2025 World Engineering Day. The World Engineering Day is a day set aside every year to celebrate Engineers and the works of Engineering. This year’s theme: SHAPING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE THROUGH ENGINEERING was celebrated in the branch with different activities.

First, the NSE Makurdi Branch led by the Chairman Engr. Phelim Ukeyima Manger, MNSE visited the PADOPADS HARMONY Secondary school, Makurdi where a career guidance talk was presented to the students to catch them young. The career talk presented by the Technical Secretary of the branch, Engr. Dr. Sefa Asortse, MNSE highlighted to the students who is an Engineer, the SSCE and JAMB subject, JAMB cut off marks, institutions offering the Engineering course, duration of study, career prospects and renumeration. This was followed by a question and answer session where the concerns of the students were well attended to. The branch also presented a one term school fees scholarship to the best Male and Female science student.

The Principal of the school represented by the Vice Principal Admin expressed appreciation of the school management to the NSE Makurdi Branch for finding the school worthy of visitation among many schools in Makurdi to celebrate this year’s world Engineering Day and for the award of scholarship to the students. There was a group photograph with the staff and students of the school.

Another key activity to mark the 2025 World Engineering Day was and industrial visit by the branch to BSU CEFTER Center for Food Technology Innovation Complex (CEFTIC), Makurdi. The branch led by the Chairman Engr. Phelim Ukeyima Manger, MNSE was received by the Deputy Director Prof. A. Adejo. In his welcome address, he said CEFTIC was set up for students learning and for Agro processing business with the aim to control post harvest losses. Commissioned on 7th December, 2024, the center is made up of five (5) units namely:

1. Water production

2. Tomato processing

3. Fruit and Vegetables processing

4. Bakery ( Bread and Biscuits)

5. Workshop.

The Assistant Project Engineer, Engr. Jeremiah Vihi took the NSE Makurdi Branch through the units explaining what happens at every unit. During the question and answer session, members of the branch raised observations on the issue of Health Safety and Environment (HSE) and also advised the management to hire the right hands for sustainability. The branch chairman in his closing remarks thanked the management for the initiative and promised NSE Makurdi Branch’s readiness to collaborate with the center for mutual benefits.

In a vote of thanks by Engr. Paul Bija on behalf of the management expressed appreciation to NSE Makurdi Branch for the visit and asked for further collaboration between the center and NSE Makurdi Branch.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers, Makurdi branch on Friday February 14, 2025 organized a welcome party for Engineering Corp members posted to Benue State at the COREN State office, behind Ministry for Rural Development and Cooperatives Makurdi. At the event with the Theme: “The Nigerian Society of Engineers: Our Heritage, our future”, the branch Chairman Engr. Ukeyima P. Manger, MNSE welcomed all guests to the event, informing them that the event was organized to officially welcome Engineering Corp members to Benue State and encouraged the Corp members to feel free to interact with members of the branch for Mentoring and Networking.

A keynote address was presented by a very seasoned Engineer, Engr. Dr. Felix Atume, FNSE, FAEng, mni titled: “The Future of Engineering in Nigeria”. Earlier, a past Chairman of the branch Engineer B. B. Jila, FNSE presented a talk on the “History of Nigerian Society of Engineers and opportunities for young Engineers”.

There was a question and answer session with brief remarks from Engr. Terhemba Agber, FNSE, Engr. Terseer Kasso, FNSE and Engr. Terna Mom, FNSE. The special guest at the occasion, Engr. Joyce Mlumun Ikpaahindi, MNSE (Technical Adviser to the Governor of Benue State on Infrastructure) presented a goodwill message.

2024 Engineering Week Day 2

Yesterday The Nigerian Society of Engineers Makurdi Branch organized a Quiz Competition amongst selected Secondary Schools in Makurdi. Seven schools were invited but only five showed up. The schools that participated include: Government Girls College, Baptist High School, Unique Secondary School, Mt. St. Gabriel’s Secondary School and Mt. Carmel College.

The competition was in three rounds after which Mt. St. Gabriel’s Secondary School came first with 63 points followed by Baptist High School with 47 points with the third position going to Mt. Camel College who scored 37 points.

The Branch Chairman thanked the participating Schools and informed them that prizes will be presented to the winners on the day of the Grand Finale which comes up on Friday 24th May, 2024.

Some members of the EXCO, Fellows and the Chairman of APWEN were in attendance.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers Makurdi branch today May 6, 2024 paid a courtesy visit on the DG, Bureau of Agricultural Mechanization Makurdi, Engr. Terese Ninga.

During the visit, the branch chairman Engr. Phelim Ukeyima Manger expressed appreciation to the DG for the opportunity granted the branch to visit the organization and also congratulated him on his well-deserved appointment as the DG.

The chairman further presented a schedule of the Branch’s activities with particular reference to the Engineering week which will come up from 20th to 24th May, 2024.

Also, the Branch’s intended projects which includes: Refurbishment of the bus, purchase of official car for the Chairman, furnishing of the Branch office were presented to the DG.

Chairman asked the DG to facilitate the implementation of Entry point of Engineers (GL 09) and the constitution of ERM State Team by the Governor as well as a courtesy call on the Governor by the NSE President during the Engineering week.

The issues of sponsorship of Engineers to conferences and assistance with payment of dues was also presented before the DG.

The chairman promised that NSE is ready to collaborate with the Bureau in possible areas of development.

Finally, they expressed appreciation to the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth I. Alia for finding five Engineers worthy of appointment in his administration after which a letter of invitation to the 2024 Engineering week was presented to the DG by the CPC Secretary, Engr. Amaka Anyawu as well as a copy of the NSE 2024 calendar by the Chairman.

Engr. Chief Isaiah A. Bajah and Engr. Terkura Wuam also made remarks.

In his response, the DG Engr. Terese Ninga expressed appreciation to the NSE for paying a courtesy visit on him and commended the present leadership of NSE Makurdi Branch for the good job they are doing to make the profession more visible.

He promised to update his dues and encourage others to do same and that the Bureau will feature in the NSE Calendar next year.

He further promised to support the 2024 Engineering Week with the sum of Three Hundred Thousand Naira (N300,000.00) only and to support the branch with the sum of One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000.00) only.

On the issue of facilitating a visit with the Governor, he said he will do that as soon the Governor provides the opportunity.

A vote of thanks was presented by the Secretary of the Bureau.

It’s strongly observed that Engineers confidence have increased in a geometric proportion since the declaration that

“Benue State EXCO had approved the sum of Four Hundred and Twenty-Six Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira (₦426.5M) for the establishment of a standard Civil Engineering Material Testing Quality Control Laboratory in the state Ministry of Works, Housing & Urban Development.

 This became necessary because it was strongly observed that most materials used for construction work in the state and in central Nigeria in general were perceived to be substandard in nature, resulting to cases of collapsed buildings, thus the ministry sought for approval for the provision of a Laboratory for construction materials to be tested as to ensure its quality, and to avoid future disasters.” This is a wonderful and incredible booster to Engineering practice. As certified Engineers, it’s exciting.

On Wednesday 28^th February 2024, The Technical Secretary, Engr. Gideon Abu, MNSE in company of the Asst. Technical Secretary, Engr. Sefa Asortse, MNSE visited the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp Wanune, Tarka LGA to deliver a professional lecture titled “Challenges of Engineering Practice in Nigeria” to Batch A Stream 1 Engineering Corp members on behalf of the Branch Chairman.

The Technical Secretary who was the main facilitator delivered the lecture with the aim of enlightening the Corp members on “what is engineering” and “who is an engineer”. The Technical Secretary added by introducing them to “The Nigerian Society of Engineers”, procedure of how to register as a member and the benefits of participating fully in the Branch activities.

After the lecture, the Corp members had an interactive session with the Technical Secretary and Asst. Technical Secretary. The Corp members were happy with the presence of the Branch EXCO for their efforts in encouraging them and requested that the Branch should make efforts for serving Corp member to serve in an engineering-based organization.
